UPDATED ADMINISTRATIVE CODE

Throughout the course of 2016, the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) had been working on amending the section of the administrative code that specifies the qualifications for licensure (61G4-15.001). During the CILB’s November board meeting, the final version of this was approved and became effective as of 01/05/2017.

What does this mean for you? Well, some of the most noteworthy changes to the new administrative code include:

  1. Experience Verbiage

They eliminated the wording which once stated that the applicant must provide affidavits from a state certified Florida contractor, architect, engineer, or a licensed building official (within the applicant’s category) which must be signed in front of a notary. This rule was eliminated in 2012. Since then, applicants must instead provide details of their experience which are attested to by signing the affirmation page on the application.

  1. Out-of-State Experience

It is now evident that out-of-state experience is acceptable as long as it can be documented that the applicant was working legally under a licensed contractor (according to the local jurisdiction they were working in). However, it still stands that any experience which would be classified as “exempted” work (pursuant to Chapter 489, Part 1, F.S.), will not be accepted.

  1. New Construction vs. Remodel

For Division I applicants, it has also been noted that major structural remodeling work is now acceptable towards the experience requirement (meaning that all of your experience does not have to be new construction from the ground-up). They have also made it clearer that experience can be almost any habitable structure.

The areas highlighted above are just some of the most prominent changes that were amended in the new administrative code.
