ELECTRICAL REGISTERED LICENSES CAN NOW GRANDFATHER

Attention all Registered Electrical Contractors! Many of you lamented the fact that the grandfathering rule that allowed registered contractors to obtain state certified licenses was only for construction contractors. Well, that is no more!

In the 2013 legislative session on June 14, 2013, House Bill 269 was approved. This allows registered electrical, alarm, and specialty electrical contractors to grandfather to a state certified license. Any contractor who holds a state-registered license that has been active for at least the last 5 years can now submit an application to receive an equivalent Certified License. This will mean that you would be able to work anywhere throughout Florida. Just register that new state license in the county you wish to do business.

The basics:

  • Currently hold a valid, active, state-registered license in one of the contractor categories defined in Section 489.505(2)(a)&(b), (12) or (19) Florida Statutes.
  • Provide a copy of your current, active local county competency card.
  • Provide a signed verification of examination and letter of good standing from the county where you are based showing that you gave, for that category, passed a written examination that the board finds to be substantially similar to the examination required to be licensed as a certified contractor under this part.
  • Have at least 5 years of active state-registered experience as a contractor in that contracting category, or as an inspector or building administrator with oversight over that category, at the time of application.
  • Have not had your contractor’s license revoked at any time, had your contractor’s license suspended within the last 5 years, or been assessed a fine in excess of $500 within the last 5 years.
  • Be in compliance with the insurance and financial responsibility requirements in Section 489.515(1)(b), Florida Statutes.
  • Provide:
    • A personal financial statement showing positive net worth.
    • A business financial statement showing net worth of $10,000 for EC or alarm or $5,000 for specialty licenses.
    • Business and personal credit reports showing good credit.
