How to Network as a Contractor

After you get licensed as a contractor, you don’t just magically get jobs and clients. You need to put yourself out there and connect with others in the industry while also marketing yourself.

It’s always a good idea to network, even if these individuals are technically your “competition.” Your local competition knows the current market and might even offer some advice on someone new entering into this market.

Heres different ways you can network as a contractor:

  • Join trade association or group. In these groups, you will learn a lot but also meet many people in the same field and specialty as you. You can help each other in many ways.
  • Make connections are local lumberyards or hardware stores. Owners can introduce you to other contractors in the area. You might eve meet potential clients or find new job opportunities through other contractors
  • Connect with sub-contractors and other contractors by grabbing lunch. Be proactive. Get conversations going. When you make connections, especially with like-minded people, you never know what opportunities will open and present themselves.
  • Go to a trade show. At a trade show, you can learn about all the latest technology and materials, while also having the opportunity to meet a lot of fellow contractors. A trade show gives you an opportunity to easily start up conversations with others.
  • Always bring your business card with you to hand to whoever you meet!

Introducing yourself and putting yourself out there may be awkward at first, but it can be extremely rewarding to your career and growth as a contractor.
