Current Challenges General Contractors Face

A general contractor has a lot on his/her plate from scheduling and safety to bidding and time management.

Although the job is a rewarding one, we wanted to share some of the current challenges facing general contractors today:

  • General contractors have to keep up with a lot of documents and files, which is why it’s a good idea to digitize file management. Documents will be easier to file and find. A person will be able to quickly reference any document when needed.
  • Implementing new technology like BIM (building information modeling) can be a difficult task, but it makes planning, managing, and organizing a project much easier. A contractor must slowly integrate new technology, so all workers are onboard with the new systems.
  • Projects are getting more complex, which means less room for error. Contractors need to hire workers who are skilled at specialized tasks and who work quickly. With more complicated projects, contractors need to learn how to manage large projects.
  • Contractors are up against skilled worker shortages in the construction industry. The number of people in the industry has been declining since the 1960s as its seen as a dangerous, difficult job. Right now, there’s about 434,000 construction jobs that need to be filled in the United States. It’s in a contractor’s best interest to try to implement newer technologies to be more attractive to prospective workers.

All industries have their challenges. With new ways of doing business and working, the construction industry is likely to see a positive change come in the future that will make contractors lives easier.

Despite the challenges, contracting is still a rewarding career where a person can use many skills and make good money.
