How to Plan for Slow Work Times as a Contractor

As we’ve seen in the past year, life can be unpredictable and thousands of businesses can completely be halted due to something out of everyone’s control. Although not everything in life will be as an extreme as a world pandemic, there’s always good and bad times in business.

It’s always good to be prepared for the bad times as a contractor, even if you’re hoping you will never see it happen.

While your business is going well, this is the time to prepare for bad times.

Here’s what you need to think about to prepare for bad/slow/no work times:

  • Who can be let go in the company and who cannot.
  • What specialty/product/service will you focus on when you cannot afford to do them all.
  • Save. Save. Save. Try to save at least six months of your business’ expenses in the bank.
  • Have a backup/side gig ready for when work is slow for you to continue to bring in some money, whether you decide to teach, do different types of projects, create a blog/YouTube channel with your expertise etc.
  • Upgrade equipment/technology when times are good.
  • Make connections who may be able to help you down the line.

These are just a few ways to prepare yourself if you are ever in a business slump.
